GIF KEYBOARD FOR HANGOUTS UPDATE
On a somewhat related note, Apple released an update to iOS last month, but Google didn’t decide to take advantage on it for version 1.3, deeming inline GIFs the feature worth improving in Hangouts. Support for inline animated GIFs is welcome based on our first few tests, we can’t pinpoint whether Google also made much-needed improvements to the app’s performance – particularly an issue for long threads and group conversations. In my tests, GIFs that I had archived in Evernote and saved to the Camera Roll weren’t attached as animated GIFs to the Hangouts app however, it’s possible that this may be an issue of the Evernote app, as GIFs saved from Safari worked well with Google’s client, retaining their beautiful and modern animations. The GIF will be played inline across the web and the new iOS app. When you open Blippy, you get a stack of GIFs. Hangouts 1.3 also lets you make and receive calls using your Google Voice number, it has indicators for contacts that are online and reachable, and it even fixes a pesky bug that caused audio playback to stop when the app was running in the foreground – but the highlight is, clearly, support for inline visualization of GIFs.Ĭonsidered a priority over smooth scrolling and proper iOS 7 support (the app sports a lovely iOS 6 keyboard), GIF support works in tandem with the iOS Camera Roll: whenever you’re in need of sending a friend, a co-worker, or a loved one a GIF that can, more than any other static image, prove a point through the use of animated cats, the new Hangouts app can pick a GIF from the Camera Roll, preview it, and insert it in a conversation.
In what can be heralded as the first “major” update to the app since May 2013, Google has today released a new version of Hangouts for iOS that brings support for animated GIFs. So I present what I think is the first, and only, publicly available list of all Google Hangouts emoji keyboard shortcuts.

When you type :) in a message, they see it has a corresponding emoji and replace it accordingly.Ī full list is then pretty easy to automatically build. ġ28515 is decimal-speak for the hexadecimal value 0x1F603, corresponding to 😃 (smiling face with open mouth U+1F603). This is the web, though, so view source a little harder and you can find a set of mappings in a JavaScript file, containing all the keyboard shortcuts which will get replaced: (If you’re careful with your mouse you can also copy a Hangouts emoji image from the grid, paste it somewhere, and it’ll work.) The upshot is when you copy text from elsewhere on the web and paste it into your Hangouts message, you won’t lose important characters like 💩. Their smiling emoji is the Unicode character 😃 (smiling face with open mouth U+1F603) and they replace it with one of their custom images.
If you go searching through the Google Hangouts source code, you’ll discover that they’re actually all backed by regular Unicode characters. Somewhat annoyingly, Google hasn’t documented any of their Hangouts keyboard shortcuts to tell you that when you urgently need to insert 💩 (pile of poo U+1F4A9) you can just type It’d be nice if there were a public list somewhere, or mouse hovering gave you some clues about using a shortcut.
